The Board of Management;

Scoil Pádraig Naofa,

Cregmore.

The Board of Management of Scoil Pádraig Naofa, Cregmore, welcomes you to our school.
You may find it interesting if we give you a brief history of the origin, organisation and roles of Boards of Managements since their establishment in 1975...............

For centuries, Ireland has had a rich and indeed envious tradition of education. From earliest Christian times, Monasteries were the main centres of learning.
During penal times, this love of learning was kept alive by hedge-school masters and wandering intellectuals. In 1831, Parliament agreed to provide funding for the establishment of schools, providing that local clergy would organise the provision of the school lands and buildings. It took several years for a final agreement to be reached between all the Churches as to who should have patronage of various schools.

Today there are 3,104 Primary Schools in Ireland under the patronage and management of the Catholic Bishops. However, it was not until 1969, following Vatican 2, that the Catholic Bishops proposed that lay people should also become involved in the management of schools.
Since 1975, the management of schools is shared by a Board of Management.
Today, the Board of Management of every school is elected every 4 years.

Every Board consists of the following 8 personnel.......
The Chairperson, Mr. Odhrán O'Mahony, the Principal of the school, Joe Kennelly, two parents of children enrolled in the school(one being a mother and the other being a father are elected at a general meeting by fellow parents), a staff Representative, and the final two additional members are proposed by the existing nominees.

Boards are obliged to meet at least once per term, and not less than five times per year While their responsibilities are wide and varied, in essence their primary role is to ensure the school operates within the “Rules of the National Schools” and within “Department of Education and Science” guidelines.

One can appreciate the arduous and responsible task these people accept in formulating the Board of Management.
Therefore it is vitally important that they are shown the deserved respect while working in a voluntary capacity ensuring the professional management of our school.
